Built in 1979, Millcreek Elementary is a Reading First and Title I school committed to developing the expertise of the professional and paraprofessional staff to teach reading and other content areas to a high level. Millcreek serves a diverse community, which is one of the school's valuable attributes. The school has partnered with the PTA, city council, Division of U.S. Fish & Wildlife, University of Kentucky and the school district office to restore the natural creek behind the school for an outdoor classroom that can be used for various instructional purposes. Millcreek’s primary program (K-3) places a heavy emphasis on learning to read, focusing on the latest research from the Science of Reading (SoR) and the five cornerstones of reading, which include phonemic awareness, phonics instructions, vocabulary, fluency, and comprehension.
